Michael E asked:
If I place a link into my web page from a large prestigious site will it really increase my visibility to the search engines?
For instance I have a niche site at the social web that pays, Yuwie, and it is focused on the planet Mars and everything to do with it.
http://www.yuwie.com/martianman
If I place a link to NASA’s Mars section it is valid in that I want people to be able to get information but ill it do me any favours google-wise for example?

Yes! Most likely that “large prestigious site” will have a high Page Ranking (PR). If you get an inbound link from that website it will do your website great, because this will increase your ranking on search engines like Google. Increasingly, inbound links are being weighed against link popularity and originating context. So just as you describe it, where the context is related to your website, your website will benefit.
You should also consider listing your website on.

The correct answer is no. Placing a link TO another website will not help you it will help THEM. Google ranks you based on links other websites link BACK to you.
Think about this. If what you want to do worked all anyone would have to do is place links to highly ranked sites like: Microsoft, Yahoo, etc.

Posting your links over the net will create a good search result for you.

Wow, I hate to be mean to those trying to be helpful. These answers are terrible. Either you misread the question or you are spewing info you read somewhere else.
The correct answer is: “A little.”
The search engines would like to send visitors to useful sites. If you provide some information and other sources for that information - your site will be deemed helpful (as long as your site is unique).
My primary source for this answer is testing. I have personally tested hundreds of articles. The articles that cite sources and link out to other resources do better (slightly).
Don’t believe me, don’t believe anyone else. Test for yourself. Publish 20+ articles, give links to half. Then watch the traffic on all articles. You are likely to find the ones with links do slightly better.
