I have decided to begin a search for my musical niche, and thus far I have found quite a few bands that I like, and quite a few that I don’t. It is almost like seeking enlightenment, difficult yet simple in different ways. If anyone out there in the R&P world has any suggestions for me on this musical voyage, I would love to get some advice. In the meantime, one of new-favorite bands:

The true beauty of music is that you don’t have to define yourself into a specific niche. Really, at the end of the day there’s only two kinds of music; good music and bad music. And the beauty of that definition is that my good music may be your bad music and the other way around. Why limit yourself to some good stuff just because it doesn’t fit into your niche.
Embrace all music. Keep yourself open to Classical, Jazz, Rock, Punk, Funk, R&B, Drum and Bass, New Wave, Jam Bands, Folk, Pop, etc. There’s a wonderful world of music out there to enjoy, find it all!

Well since you’re calling it a journey, you can’t have a journey without some psychedellic, man.

I find that sticking to one genre or “niche” isn’t the way to musical enlightenment. When you can listen to all genres and pick out an artist or band that you like, then that is finding enlightenment.
For me, I like mostly Rock/Punk/Metal/Alternative based music, but I can go to any genre, even ones that I despise and find an artist/band that I admire and enjoy listening to.
Such as:
Country - Johnny Cash
Jazz - Miles Davis
Blues - Robert Johnson, Eric Clapton, SRV
Classical - Beethoven
Rap/Hip Hop - Mac Dre
I think being a musician myself helps me appreciate some of these guys better than someone who doesn’t have any experience with music, other than listening to it… not that listening to one style is a bad thing, cuz it’s not. You’re only supposed to listen to what you like, but I think it’s important to give everything else a fair chance.
